Organization language defaults

Go to Organization Settings and find the Receipt Language section:

  • Primary language -- English (en) or French Canadian (fr-CA).
  • Secondary language (optional) -- None (default) or whichever of English/French isn't chosen as primary.

These defaults set which PDF template variant a run uses when you set up the project, and they're the fallback for a donor's delivery-email language whenever that donor's own language is blank in your import data. A donor's own language, when set in your import, always takes priority over the organization defaults for the email. If you set both a primary and a secondary language, donors without an explicit language land on the organization's bilingual default for email purposes.

Per-donor language from your import

Add a language column to your import file so each donor can carry their own language independent of the organization default. Free-form values are recognized automatically -- for example EN, FR, English, French, français, Bilingual, bilingue, and combined forms like EN+FR or Bilingual EN-FR. Blank cells fall back to the organization's default language(s). This per-donor language selects the delivery email's language -- see the next section for how the PDF's language is chosen. Template and email variants

The receipt PDF's language is a single choice for the whole run, made when you set up the project -- not a per-donor choice. The built-in Canada CRA-ready PDF templates ship in English, French, and bilingual variants; pick whichever variant matches your donor base when you configure the project's PDF template (choose bilingual if your donors are a mix of English and French speakers). Every receipt generated in that run uses the same PDF variant. See PDF Templates for the four Canada templates these variants apply to.

The delivery email's language is chosen per donor, using each donor's resolved language (their own import value, or the organization default when blank). Email templates only carry a language of English or Canadian French -- there is no separate bilingual email variant. For a donor resolved to a bilingual language, the delivery email uses whichever language comes first in the resolved order (your donor's own language, or your organization's primary language when the donor's language is blank). Number and date formats

Amounts and dates on the receipt PDF follow the template variant's language, not necessarily the donor's raw import value:

Bilingual templates keep English-style amount formatting but use an ISO date so the single date field reads unambiguously in both languages.

The app in French

Separately from receipt language, the TaxReceipt.app interface itself -- navigation, forms, settings, dashboards -- is available in English or French. Use the Language control (globe icon) to switch; the choice is saved to your profile and applies every time you sign in. This only changes what you see in the app -- it has no effect on the language of receipts or delivery emails sent to donors.
