Find answers to common questions about TaxReceipt.app

Your Data Rights

TaxReceipt.app respects your privacy and supports GDPR-compliant data management. You can view, export, or delete all your data at any time.

View Your Data

See a summary of all data associated with your account:

  1. Go to Settings then Data & Privacy.
  2. The summary page shows counts for receipts, organizations, templates, and stored PDFs.

This gives you a quick overview without downloading anything.

Export Your Data

Download a complete copy of your data:

  1. Go to Settings then Data & Privacy.
  2. Click Export All Data.
  3. Your browser downloads a ZIP file right away, containing:
    • CSV files covering your account, organizations, receipts, templates, and subscription history.
    • metadata.json recording the export date and what the archive contains.

This satisfies the GDPR rights to access and data portability (Articles 15 and 20). The export covers your data records; if you also need copies of the generated PDF files themselves, download them individually from each receipt -- see Downloading Receipts.

Delete Your Account

Permanently remove your account and all associated data:

  1. Go to Settings then Data & Privacy.
  2. Click Delete My Account. A preview shows every organization the deletion will affect.
  3. If you own an organization that has other members, decide what happens to it: Delete Organization, or Transfer Ownership to another admin (only offered if the organization has other admins).
  4. Check all four confirmations:
    • I understand that deletion is permanent after the 30-day grace period.
    • I understand tax law may require 7-year receipt retention.
    • I have exported my data or do not need a copy.
    • I understand I have 30 days to cancel this deletion.
  5. If two-factor authentication (2FA) is enabled on your account, verify with a code before the request goes through.
  6. Click Confirm Deletion.

30-Day Grace Period

  • Deletion is scheduled 30 days out -- nothing is removed immediately.
  • Reminder emails go out as the date approaches, at 28, 21, 14, and 7 days remaining.
  • Billing records are kept in anonymized form to satisfy multi-year tax retention rules, without retaining personal donor data.
  • After 30 days, all remaining data is permanently and irrecoverably deleted.

Cancel Deletion

Changed your mind? While the grace period is running, the Data & Privacy page shows a banner with the scheduled date and days remaining. Click Cancel Deletion there and your account continues as normal -- no need to contact support.

Tax Record Warning

Canadian and US tax regulations may require charities to retain receipt records for 7 years. Before deleting your account, consider:

  • Exporting all receipt data using the Export feature above.
  • Keeping a local backup of generated PDFs.
  • Consulting with your accountant or tax advisor.

One of the deletion confirmations requires you to check that you've exported your data or don't need a copy, so you can't complete the deletion request without considering this.
